During an address last week, Employment and Labour Minister; Thulas Nxesi; announced that the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and Labour Activation Programme (LAP) is ready to provide massive training for unemployed individuals. This training initiative is expected to roll out to other provinces.
Nxesi’s address had a key emphasis on advancing technology and adaptation.
“We are living in a technological era. This massive training is now needed to be implemented on a large scale to multi-skill the unemployed [so they can] adapt to the ever-changing world of technology,” the minister said. “It is unacceptable that Gauteng, as the country’s economic hub, has a high unemployment rate and this situation could be even worse in other provinces.”
The training initiative launched with a R23.8 billion budget, and seeks to help businesses and develop new industries.
