At the end of last week, Zambian president Hakainde Hichilema declared that the nation was in a state of state of disaster due to drought.
Without rain for five weeks, the agricultural sector has taken a damaging blow, affecting over a million farming households. Out of the country’s 116 districts, 84 have been affected.
Hichilema stated during his speech that the country seeks to implement measures to improve the situation, such as importing electricity, as well as long-term solutions like water harvesting and other irrigation projects to help boost agriculture.
Due to the weather phenomenon El Nino, Zambia has suffered a loss of one million hectares of planted crops.
