In the hopes of calling for a ceasefire, President Cyril Ramaphosa met with Sudan leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), General Mohamed Dagalo, in Pretoria on Thursday, January 4th.
Ramaphosa acknowledged the important role the African Union and IGAD (Intergovernmental Authority on Development) played in mediating the volatile situation in Sudan, which began in April 2023.
The president also expressed South Africa’s support for the dialogue between General Dagalo and General Burhan, in which he highlighted that their diplomatic discussions could achieve peace in the region. Ramaphosa reiterated the need for a ceasefire, and urged dialogue for the permanent cessation of hostilities in the region.
