Last week, South Africa became the first country to submit an 84-page document to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) claiming Israel’s actions against Palestine were “genocidal in character”, with the Palestinian death toll now over 22,000.
Though the application was met with backlash from Israel’s allies, countries like Malayasia and Turkiye have given their support of the move.
In a statement from Malaysia’s foreign affairs office, it stated that South Africa’s decision to challenge Israel’s actions was a step towards accountability for the horrors committed in Palestine. The Turkish government added their support, hoping that those responsible for the atrocities will be held accountable by international law.
The case is scheduled to be heard at The Hague, Netherlands, on the 11th and 12th of January.
