Good news for egg stocks nationwide

After weeks of many South Africans being without access to eggs following the bird flu outbreak across the poultry sector, the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development has revealed that there is no need to panic buy eggs, as levels of egg stocks are constantly refilling.

The department has stated that there are currently open import permits from other countries; including Brazil, the USA, and Argentina; for poultry products. This includes a variety of eggs such as table, fertilised, pasteurised, as well as powdered and liquid eggs, which have been imported prior the avian flu outbreak.

“Since the egg production cycle is not too long, we expect the situation to normalise early next year. We will continue to import more eggs should the situation not improve,” Minister Thoko Didiza stated.
