South African shark barriers gain international acclaim

Developed by marine biologists hailing from the University of Stellenbosch, South African-designed shark barriers are now in use in the Bahamas, gaining international acclaim.

Since development that began in 2012, the SharkSafe Barrier is a safer alternative to shark nets, which have caused a number of deaths of marine life and sharks every year. According to Dr Sara Andreottie; director and chief operations officer of the shark barriers; the product can work in any ocean. It mimics the appearance of a kelp forest, and uses magnetic fields to harmlessly deter sharks.

After the barriers first commercial installing in the Bahamas, they will be used in Bitou, Plettenberg Bay, following two shark-related fatalities last year.
