In an effort to reduce plastic waste, the Western Cape's Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning - with the help of some private sectors - has collaborated with provincial and national government departments to build sustainable homes in Cape Town.
The project is a school-based recycling initiative that turns plastic waste into concrete blocks.
"We're trying to influence behavior change of how to see waste differently, seeing it as a resource," director of sustainability in the provincial Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Ron Mukanya, told News24.
"We're in close to 20,000 homes; that's just by virtue of the number of learners we are currently reaching. We're looking to double that over the next twelve months."
