In Durban, the eThekwini Municipality has partnered with the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) in an effort to clean up the railway lines. The eThekwini units included in this clean-up operation are iTRUMP Area-Based Management, the Cleansing and Solid Waste Unit, and metro police.
The municipality stated, “Working together, teams have removed mounds of waste that were illegally dumped by residents and businesses. The Prasa railway clean-up is ongoing.
“The City urges businesses and residents to play their part to keep eThekwini clean. They can do this by following proper waste management practices, which includes taking out their refuse on scheduled collection days and avoiding illegal dumping.”
In the past few weeks, Prasa spokesperson Zama Nomnganga said that their collaborative efforts with the municipality has yielded in successful cleaning operations on the railway lines, as well as the removal of informal traders and vagrants that operate there.
Nomnganga urges the public to avoid illegal dumping, and added that Prasa is in the process of repairing and restoring infrastructure that had been damaged during the April 2022 floods.
