Appropriate response to crisis situation

In the aftermath of the unrest and plundering in South Africa, it is imperative for citizens to respond appropriately.

Political stability, safety and security are paramount for people to worship, trade, work, socialise and travel. Unrest and instability impacts our lives in many ways.

As things stand, many people have suffered immense loss in their businesses and livelihoods. The consequences of actions by the criminal elements of society are also set to have severe short-term implications to the food chain all across the country.

In such circumstances the Qur’anic and Prophetic response to crisis becomes ever more relevant and imperative. It is inherent in humans to seek solutions for their problems. Islam has given us universal guidelines for all conditions and circumstances.

Short term measures to be adopted with immediate effect are to recite Surah Yaseen and all relevant duas for safety and protection, to repent profusely, to give charity and to supplicate fervently and to render assistance to the afflicted in whatever way possible.

However the foremost guidance of the Qur’an is to adopt good deeds, Salah, charity, empathy, forgiveness, patience and piety. A vital pre-requisite of divine protection is repentance and constant efforts towards reformation and developing good character towards people.

Be vigilant, take all precautionary measures, and stay safe.
