Damaged cables affects internet across South Africa

Towards the end of last week, four undersea telecommunications cables went offline, causing major internet disruptions across the continent. These cables include: the West Africa Cable System (WACS), Africa Coast to Europe (ACE), MainOne, and SAT-3.

At the time of disconnection, Microsoft and Vodacom services were disrupted for a short period. Other African countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon have also been impacted.

Director of internet analysis firm Kentik, Doug Madory, said, “This is a devastating blow to internet connectivity along the west coast of Africa, which will be operating in a degraded state for weeks to come.”

According to Ghana’s communications regulator, it would take at least five weeks to repair the damaged cables.
