Western Cape: September floods declared national disaster

Over the Heritage Day long weekend, a severe storm caused damages throughout the Western Cape, leaving at least eight people dead amidst trails of disaster. This includes the damaging of thousands of structures, including those in communities and farms that were left submerged in the floods.

Wouter Kriel – local government spokesperson of the Western Cape – has expressed that the state of disaster issued is a welcome one, making available disaster relief funds.

“The damage assessment that the province has calculated comes to R154 million for municipal damages. There’s another R441 million damages to provincial infrastructure such as buildings, roads, bridges, and water supply networks.”
