According to Sheikh Isgaak Taliep, national executive manager of the Al Quds Foundation of South Africa, the training academy will be a huge boost for the medical fraternity in Gaza, already struggling with under-skilled doctors who are contending with a barrage of chronically ill patients.
Gaza is the most densely populated area on earth, and has been labelled as the worlds ‘largest outdoor prison’. The Israeli siege has led to complete politicization and financial boycotts. Israeli authorities have closed the borders for patients urgently seeking medical care, as well as students and medical staff who hope to leave to gain higher qualifications. Doctors need materials for laboratories, and in the last four years they have lost hundreds of patients, due to lack of medicine and medical facilities.
