From the Fatwa Department

Q: Muslims today follow football teams and other sports with lots of ardency, passion and energy. People make dua for victory of their team and spend hours in discussion on results, players, teams and results. Young children will be seen idolising their favourite player and sporting jerseys with his name imprinted on it. Is this desirable and okay for a Muslim. Can we make dua for our team ?

Q: Is it permissible to play computer and mobile games?

Q: Social media platforms like Whatsapp, Twitter, facebook and others allow a person to post a profile picture with one’s portfolio and contact detail. People use this to post a photograph of themselves, spouse, child, some animate object or a picture of something relating to their personal life. Is this permissible? Please explain.

Q: Is it permissible for Muslim business to sell  fireworks?

Q: Performing Salah on a journey can become difficult especially on a long flight when 2 or 3 Salah need to be performed in flight. Is it necessary to perform the Salah in the time whilst on journey or is one allowed to forego the prayer and perform it later? What happens when a person is travelling on an aircraft and the flight attendants refuse permission to stand and face Qiblah for Salah?

Q: On the issue of begging I would like to know whether it is compulsory to give to every beggar that comes to your car or home if you are in possession of extra monies? Eg: does it matter if you can see the person is on drugs or is drunk or is well dressed etc.
